ONE PAINTED FRONT · A REVERSE THAT FITS THE INSTALLATION
For a wall-mounted sign, painted fascia or joinery component, one-sided MDO gives your finishing team a smooth overlay face with a reverse selected for the way the part mounts. Choose the core, backer and finishing stage, then order sheets or prepared components from our factory.
Send the colour, graphics or finish reference for the front. The back can be supplied with or without backer paper, with the coating or attachment preparation your installation needs.
Choose 1220 × 3050mm sheets where a tall sign or infill needs an uninterrupted face. We help compare continuous parts and designed joints against your drawing, handling needs and full order quantity.
For MDO working surfaces on both sides, compare Double-sided MDO Plywood. Start with a photo or the part you want to make; we can develop the front, reverse and processing details with you.
SIGNS · EXTERIOR TRIM · JOINERY
Keep graphics continuous across the visible face. Include brackets, rear recesses and the finished outline so the panel is prepared for its mounting arrangement.
Choose the exterior bond, front finish and reverse treatment together. Carry the project’s joints, support and exposed-edge details into the factory cutting and finishing brief.
Order one paint-grade front with a concealed, bonded or mechanically fixed reverse. Include the final thickness and edge finish where the component fits a frame or adjacent part.
Select the forming overlay and concrete-contact face around the surface result you need. Include the release procedure, panel joints and support design in a working trial.
For further overlay selection, see our MDO plywood guide. For a fixed-thickness forming route, compare 18mm Concrete Shuttering Plywood, keeping your required overlay in the enquiry.
MDO-1S · PLYWOOD CORE · SELECTED REVERSE
Our single-sided construction combines a 330–400g/m² resin-impregnated kraft-fibre MDO overlay, with at least 30% resin, and a calibrated eucalyptus, birch or radiata pine plywood core. A plugged solid B-grade sub-face supports the overlay. Choose the core and layup with the thickness and intended use.

With-backer and without-backer options let you match the reverse to an enclosed space, exposed rear, bracket or bonded surface. Include its finish and attachment requirements in the same order as the front.
Order the MDO surface unprimed, with a specified primer or with an agreed completed coating. One-step and two-step manufacture describe the pressing route; 1S identifies the single MDO working face. Keep the selected route and preparation with the sample.
| Reverse condition | Specify in the enquiry | Check in the sample or drawing |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosed behind the face | Mating materials, space, rear finish and relevant exposure. | The supplied reverse suits the identified assembly conditions. |
| Open or ventilated cavity | How the reverse, lower edge and fixings are exposed. | Required coating or treatment remains identifiable beyond the visible front. |
| Mechanically attached | Bracket or fastener detail, entry face and local machining. | Actual construction and dimensions match the applicable attachment design. |
| Bonded to another material | Backer/rear-surface identity, adhesive, substrate and process. | Review the backer, adhesive and mating substrate together for the required bond. |
| Visible from an edge or access point | Permitted rear appearance, colour and exposed boundaries. | Select the rear appearance and finish for the chosen reverse; specify a second MDO working face when required. |
For bonding, compare the actual rear surface, adhesive and mating substrate as an assembly. For mechanical attachment, include the bracket, fixing and rear-machining detail. A representative corner or joint sample helps select the interface for production.
The selected construction uses exterior phenolic WBP adhesive, with EN 314-2 Class 3 in TDS-PS-18. Factory edges receive two coats of the chosen exterior acrylic-alkyd or polyurethane sealer. Include fresh cuts and openings in the finishing plan.
TWO STANDARD LENGTHS · METRIC AND INCH ORDERS
Standard formats are 1220 × 2440mm and 1220 × 3050mm. Metric thicknesses are 9, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21 and 25mm. Calibrated metric panels up to 19mm have the ±0.30mm reference; thicker panels have their limits set with the selected nominal.
Inch orders run from 3/8 to 1 inch, with their manufacturing target and finished limits identified separately, including the available 9.5mm manufacturing nominal. A 3/8 inch conversion is 9.525mm and 1 inch is 25.4mm. Choose the ordered thickness around the finished fit.
| Format | Exact metric conversion | Standard metric sheet dimensions | Usable size after 10mm edge trims |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 8 ft | 1219.2 × 2438.4mm | 1220 × 2440mm | 1200 × 2420mm |
| 4 × 10 ft | 1219.2 × 3048.0mm | 1220 × 3050mm | 1200 × 3030mm |
The exact foot conversions describe the inch format; use the actual metric dimensions supplied for cutting. The stated ±1.0mm sheet length/width tolerance and the chosen trim allowance belong in the final cutting schedule.
Record the stage your drawing controls. Add the subsequent front and rear dry coatings to the supplied panel thickness when checking a channel, frame or adjacent face.
The 625kg/m³ loading table gives approximately 22.3kg at 12mm and 33.5kg at 18mm for 1220 × 2440mm sheets before export packaging. The longer format needs its own weight and pack plan.
CONTINUOUS FRONT · DESIGNED JOINT · COMPLETE ORDER
The layouts compare the same 590 × 2800mm installed envelope. A continuous component is 590 × 2800mm; a split assembly uses two 590 × 1398.5mm pieces and a 3mm joint. Bring the permitted joint, artwork alignment and mounting arrangement into the choice.
With 10mm trim on every outer edge, the two sheet formats provide 1200 × 2420mm and 1200 × 3030mm usable rectangles. Two 590mm widths and one 3mm kerf occupy 1183mm. A continuous 2800mm part fits the long sheet; it also exceeds the shorter usable sheet’s approximately 2701.2mm diagonal.
| Sheet format | Required component | Grid and occupied dimensions | Pieces per sheet | Complete assemblies per sheet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1220 × 2440mm | 590 × 2800mm continuous | Does not fit the usable rectangle | 0 | 0 |
| 1220 × 3050mm | 590 × 2800mm continuous | 2 across × 1 along · 1183 × 2800mm | 2 | 2 |
| 1220 × 2440mm | 590 × 1398.5mm split part | 2 across × 1 along · 1183 × 1398.5mm | 2 | 1 |
| 1220 × 3050mm | 590 × 1398.5mm split part | 2 across × 2 along · 1183 × 2800mm | 4 | 2 |
| Supply plan | Required pieces | Sheets | Purchased one-side area | Visible horizontal joints |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Continuous · larger sheet | 12 | 6 | 22.3260m² | 0 split joints |
| Split · smaller sheet | 24 | 12 | 35.7216m² | 12 split joints |
| Split · larger sheet | 24 | 6 | 22.3260m² | 12 split joints |
Twelve continuous assemblies use twelve long parts from six larger sheets. Twelve split assemblies use twenty-four shorter parts from twelve smaller sheets or six larger sheets. Both larger-sheet routes buy 22.3260m² of one-side sheet area; the smaller-sheet split route buys 35.7216m².
The saw kerf removes material during cutting; the installed gap separates the finished parts. Both use 3mm in this layout but remain separate allowances. Check the actual cutting direction, dimensions, trim and any required spares with your drawing.
Choose a split where access, handling or the installation calls for it. Compare material, machining, joint preparation, finishing and packing in the complete factory quotation, with the sheet, piece and assembly quantities clearly identified.
VISIBLE LINE · MATING EDGES · FINISHED SURFACE
One 590mm-wide joint creates a 0.590m visible line and 1.180m of mating panel edges. Across twelve assemblies, that becomes 7.080m of joint line and 14.160m of edges to include in preparation and treatment.
| Measured quantity | Continuous parts | Split parts with 3mm joints | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installed envelopes | 12 | 12 | Each envelope is 590 × 2800mm. |
| Physical panel pieces | 12 | 24 | One long part or two shorter parts per assembly. |
| Front panel area | 19.824000m² | 19.802760m² | The split plan excludes 0.021240m² of joint gaps. |
| Visible horizontal joint length | 0.000m | 7.080m | 12 × 590mm joint lines. |
| Mating panel edges at those joints | 0.000m | 14.160m | Two physical component edges at each joint. |
| All component perimeters | 81.360m | 95.448m | Every perimeter of the required rectangular pieces. |
| Edge-wall area using a 12mm thickness input | 0.976320m² | 1.145376m² | Total component perimeter × 0.012m. |
A continuous component has 1.652000m² of front surface; the two split pieces have 1.650230m². The 590 × 3mm gap accounts for 0.001770m² per assembly, while the installed envelope remains 590 × 2800mm.
Perimeter is 6.780m for the continuous piece and 7.954m for a split pair. The additional 1.174m equals 1.180m of mating edges less 0.006m at the two outside vertical runs. Twelve assemblies total 81.360m or 95.448m.
At a 12mm thickness input, edge-wall areas are 0.976320m² and 1.145376m². Use the actual manufactured thickness and add holes, profiles, coating overlap and process allowance when preparing finishing quantities.
Treat mating edges before the joint conceals them. Cover strips, profiles, rear coatings and attachment interfaces have their own dimensions and operations; include them with the solid panel faces and boundaries in the supplied scope.
PROTECT THE FRONT · MACHINE THE BACK · FINISH THE PART
Mark the MDO face, reverse, top edge and part reference before machining. Show rear recesses, holes and their depth datum on the drawing. We can supply full sheets, cut blanks or processed parts, with the preparation and edge protection you select.
Minimum panel thickness − deepest cutting envelope. Use the selected panel’s lower limit and include the tool point, overtravel and later removal. Check the remaining layers, fixing requirement and front appearance on a processed sample.
Support position + rear coating + supplied panel + front coating. Add adhesive, bracket variation and fitting allowances where they affect the assembly. The supplied panel already includes its overlay and backer.
Choose an unprimed surface, specified primer or completed coating. Follow the selected finishing system through preparation and cure, including the reverse, cut perimeter and openings. Inspect the visible face again after rear machining and check the finished fit with the actual hardware.
For forming work, choose the concrete-contact overlay and release treatment with the required cast finish. Review both the concrete surface and panel condition after the trial, alongside the support and fixing design.
FINISH · REVERSE INTERFACE · JOINT OR LONG PART
Compare the MDO surface, selected core and backer, then check the primer or paint across a cut edge and opening. Include the rear mounting or bonding interface where it matters.
Check the outline, continuous graphic, joint gap and alignment with the actual mounting detail. Include any rear recess, completed coating and protected mating edges.
Start with your use, photo or finish reference. We help choose a useful sample and retain the selected construction, coating and drawing revision for production and repeat orders.
ONE WORKING FACE · A COMPLETE COMPONENT CHECK
| Check | Record the actual condition | Compare with |
|---|---|---|
| Working-face identity | MDO face, supplied finish and relevant surface findings. | Selected overlay use and accepted sample. |
| Reverse option | Backer reference or agreed alternative rear surface. | The exact quoted construction and attachment/finish scope. |
| Dimensions | Selected nominal, measured thickness, actual length/width and squareness. | The agreed limits at the stated supplied or completed stage. |
| Rear machining | Entry face, datum, location and deepest actual cutting envelope. | Drawing revision and permissible remaining construction. |
| Cut boundaries | Perimeter, holes, joint edges and later cuts. | Completed protection and appearance specified for each boundary. |
| Assembly and packing | Continuous parts or correctly paired split parts; working-face protection. | Finished envelope, joint allowance, part identity and pack quantities. |
Record the actual thickness, outline, machining depth and finished stage with the part or pack identity. For paired components, check the installed envelope and joint allowance together. Keep the front appearance and rear attachment findings connected to the same drawing revision.
LONG PARTS · PAIRED SETS · FACE PROTECTION
Protect the MDO working face with suitable clean separators and supported packs. Keep the top edge, rear option and component reference visible on the labels. Paired pieces travel under the same assembly identity.
Six larger sheets can provide twelve continuous components or twenty-four split pieces for twelve assemblies. Use the actual unit on the packing list, with reserves listed separately. For painted supply, agree the cure and handling stage before separation and stacking.
