START WITH YOUR REQUIREMENT

Choose the faces around the finished component.

Start with the decision you need to make

For a sign, partition or joinery part, decide which faces the customer will see. One-sided MDO lets you specify the front and reverse separately; double-sided MDO gives you an overlay on both broad faces. We help you connect that choice with the finish, edges and completed dimensions.

Bring your part drawing and intended coating system. A representative sample with a finished edge, hole or attachment helps your workshop assess preparation, appearance and fit on the proposed construction. For concrete work, use the forming selection route to discuss the overlay and trial around the concrete finish.

MDO Plywood order specification
RequirementDetails to agreeWhy it matters
Overlay usePainted surface, concrete contact or another specified application.Different uses need an appropriate overlay specification.
Number of facesOne or two overlaid sides; reverse quality and finish.A concealed reverse still needs a defined condition.
DimensionsSheet size, thickness and finished tolerances.Match the component and edge details.
Coating processPrimer, topcoat, preparation and exposure.Use a representative finish trial.
Core and edgesPlywood construction, bond, cut-edge treatment and holes. The overlay does not protect newly exposed core areas.
One-sided formats1220 × 2440mm and 1220 × 3050mm standard sheets; metric nominal thicknesses 9, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21 and 25mm. The 9.5mm and inch-based orders are separate manufacturing options.Agree actual metric dimensions, manufacturing nominal and finished limits for the part.
Double-sided formats1220 × 2440mm standard sheets; metric nominal thicknesses 9, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21 and 25mm. The 1220 × 3050mm size and inch-based orders are custom manufacturing options.Keep both visible faces and the finished edge in the coating and sample plan.
Double-sided coreBirch or eucalyptus; listed veneer reference C grade or better.Record the chosen construction and grading basis with the quotation.
One-sided reverseWith or without backer paper; define the actual reverse, supplied condition and attachment interface.Include rear bonding, recesses or hardware in the component drawing.
Supplied finishUnprimed overlay, primer or agreed completed coating on each required face.Coordinate the panel supply stage with the finishing work your own workshop will complete.
Machining and finished fitReference face, final dimensions, holes, routed details, edge profile and coating allowance.Check the completed detail against the frame or mating part in the sample.

Approve the finished detail before repeating it

Use the proposed MDO construction with your intended preparation, primer and topcoat. Include a visible edge, routed area or through-hole so the sample represents the part your workshop will make. Record the accepted appearance and completed dimensions with the coating process; this gives production and repeat orders a useful reference.

Choose the overlay for the work it will do

For a painted panel, start with the required appearance and coating process. For concrete formwork, start with the concrete finish, joints and release arrangement. We discuss the selected overlay, plywood construction and sample or trial for that use, keeping painted and concrete-contact requirements distinct in the quotation.

Make the sheet format work for longer components

The one-sided route includes 4 × 10 ft as well as 4 × 8 ft; the double-sided route lists 4 × 8 ft. Send finished component lengths with trim and machining needs so the quote uses actual usable dimensions. Include pack support and face protection when the order contains long or pre-finished parts.

FROM PANEL TO COMPONENT

Match the construction to the application

Two-sided painted components

Identify which side is seen from each direction and whether both need the same finish. Use the two-face schedule to define preparation and acceptance.

Single-face signs and joinery

Use one MDO face where the front will be painted and the rear has a different job. Specify the backer or reverse finish with the fixing, bonding and exposure details so the completed part works as intended.

Specified formwork faces

State concrete-contact use explicitly and agree the actual overlay grade and construction. Include the surface reference and inspection requirements before selecting the panel.

SAMPLE THE PROPOSED PANEL

Approve the painted detail your customer will see.

Choose the one-sided or double-sided construction and use your intended preparation, primer and topcoat on a representative sample. Include the visible edge, hole or routed detail that matters to the finished part.

For a rear attachment, assess the specified reverse with the actual mating surface or hardware. Record the selected construction, coating process and final dimensions so the accepted detail can be repeated through production.

MDO Plywood questions

Which thicknesses and formats can I compare?

Both MDO routes list metric nominal thicknesses of 9, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21 and 25mm. One-sided MDO offers 1220 × 2440mm and 1220 × 3050mm standard sheets; double-sided MDO offers 1220 × 2440mm, with 1220 × 3050mm by custom order. The one-sided 9.5mm option and listed inch-based orders are separate manufacturing specifications, with their own nominal and finished limits.

What is the difference between MDO plywood and MDF?

MDO plywood has a resin-impregnated fibre overlay on a plywood veneer core. MDF is a fibreboard substrate. If you need a smooth painted component, tell us the shape, thickness and exposure so we can help compare the relevant panel options.

Can we order unpainted or finished MDO panels?

Tell us whether you need the overlay unprimed, primed or with an agreed completed coating. Specify the finish on each required face and the edges, then review a representative sample with the proposed preparation and coating process.

When should I choose one-sided rather than double-sided MDO?

Choose around the finished component: one-sided MDO provides a specified front with a separately chosen reverse; double-sided MDO provides overlaid faces on both sides. Include the view from each direction and the rear attachment or exposure in your brief.

Can MDO be used for concrete forms?

Tell us the concrete finish and forming process so we can discuss a suitable forming overlay, panel construction and working trial. Keep that requirement clear in the quotation alongside the contact face, release treatment and formwork design.

What should a coating sample include?

Use the selected construction with the intended surface preparation, primer and topcoat. Include a visible edge, hole or routed detail and record the finished dimensions and appearance. For two-sided panels, assess both faces as they will be seen in service.

Can you supply cut or routed MDO components?

Send the part drawing, final dimensions, reference face and any recesses or openings. We can discuss the machining, finish stage and protection at exposed edges, then quote full sheets or processed parts with the required quantities and packing.
